Pride Flags, a History

The pride flag, sometimes called the rainbow flag and freedom flag, typically represents the LGBT movement or the lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender communities. The different colors symbolize the struggles that the community has undergone, diversity and the harmonious relationships in the LGBT community and the hope for the future. The pride flag originated in United States where it was hand-dyed by Gilbert Baker who in turn flaunted it in San Francisco during the June 25, 1978 Gay Freedom Day Parade. It originally consisted of eight striped colors that have specific meanings aside; hot pink for sexuality, red for life, orange is for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise is for magic, blue for serenity and violet for spirit.

With the appearance of the first pride flag in the parade, people then associated it with the LGBT’s yet it was not until November 27, 1978 that a great demand for the flag occurred due to the assassination of a recognized gay official, San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk. With the increase in demand, Paramount Flag Company had difficulty supplying that’s why it ought to sell a new version of the pride flag with seven stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue and violet. Baker, who made the original pride flag, also dropped the hot pink color since it was very difficult to find such material. But then again in 1979, the pride flag was modified since the center stripe appeared vague whenever it is hung vertically. So it was then decided to have an even number of stripes where the turquoise was dropped and resulted to what we now see as the six striped pride flag.

The Pride Flag Reigns

Probably one of the most symbolic flag that we see today is the pride flag, because it represents the struggles of the gay community over the prejudices in the society. Although it does not affect everybody, this diverse group takes pride in it because it could only mean that there people like them had stood up and finally had the courage to seek equal rights and beliefs regardless how society looks upon them. Other than that, the pride flag posted on a building through a display flag pole, serves notice that residents need understanding and respect for the choice they have made as individuals. It is important that we respect them, just like anybody else, no barriers, because they are also human beings out to make a life meaningful here on this planet.

In the earlier times, people treated gays harshly - they were abandoned by their families, pushed away by friends and the neighborhood, bullied in school and at work and persecuted every time they appear. And when a gay pride flag is seen hanged outside one’s door, it becomes a signal for people to be indifferent and just.

At this time and age, gay prejudices have somewhat mellowed because a number of people have realized that they too are also part of a society just like you and me. They may have different views and beliefs but that does not make them less of a person. Still there are aggressive oppositions towards the gay community but in due time, it will pass and we will co-exist without judgement as nothing is permanent.
